If you’ve ever wanted to grow your own oyster mushrooms, you probably have wondered where to buy oyster mushroom spawn. The best way to get it is from the wild, where it grows in response to changes in their environment and stress. The next time you’re tempted to buy it in a store, consider this: you can also purchase rye grain spawn, coffee grounds, or other organic materials. All of these sources of oyster mushroom spawn are safe and easily available.

Pasteurize coffee grounds

To produce a thriving harvest of oyster mushrooms, you must first know where to buy oyster mushroom spawn. It is possible to grow these edible mushrooms on spent coffee grounds. Coffee shops usually don’t throw away their grounds because of the possibility of growing edible mushrooms on them. You can freeze the spent grounds until you are ready to inoculate them. During the next two weeks, they should be kept in a dark and warm location between 68 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

After three weeks, the coffee and spawn mixture should be completely white. If there are green areas in the mixture, they are probably the result of competitor mold. Salting the mixture can kill off the mold, allowing the mushroom mycelium to grow in peace. However, it is possible to accidentally use low-quality spawn that contains mold spores. So, be sure to sterilize your coffee grounds and follow the instructions on the packet.

Coffee grounds are a cheap and easily available source of nutritional substrate for growing oyster mushrooms. They are also environmentally friendly since they don’t require greenhouses or gardens. You can grow oyster mushrooms on spent coffee grounds all year round. These mushrooms can be grown on coffee grounds, spent tea grounds, or even coffee beans. Oyster mushrooms are easy to grow and can be grown on a wide variety of mediums.

Pasteurize rye grain spawn

For the first round of A1 spawn, we prepared a total of 18 treatment and control jars. Each treatment jar was prepared with 200g rye grain, 200g water, 400g BSG, and 2g d-gypsum. We sterilized the jars by applying 17-20 psi for 60 minutes. We then inoculated each jar with two square centimeters of agar culture.

You can also use a stove-top pressure cooker or an electric bench-top pressure cooker to sterilise the jars. However, instapots do not reach nearly the same level of pressure, and sterilisation times may need to be extended by 30 minutes. In any case, this method is a viable alternative for pasteurising rye grain spawn for oyster mushroom cultivation.

After transferring the culture to the sterilized grains, you should wait for several days for it to colonize. It can take as long as a few weeks for a dung-loving species to fully colonize a tub. Wood-loving species, on the other hand, will take longer. In any case, the process will take you about two weeks. And once the spawn is colonized, you can harvest it in the fall.
