Imperfect Produce, a subscription service provider, salvages these veggies and delivers them directly to customers – saving farmers money by not throwing away food that would normally go unsold.

What is Odd Shaped Produce?

Odd-shaped fruits and vegetables refer to those that don’t fit standard shapes. Examples include bell peppers that cannot stand upright or leeks that have been curved. They may resemble body parts or religious imagery as well. Although these produce items may seem strange at first glance, they’re often nutritious and healthful!

Many factors can cause fruit or vegetables to take an unusual shape, such as damage or scar tissue. In the early stages of development, this can cause plants to slow down their growth rate and deform their shape. For root vegetables especially, insufficient fertilization may also contribute to strange growth patterns.

Due to drought-stricken farmers around the country, many fruit and vegetable crops have been stunted or misshapen due to lack of soil moisture. As a result, we’re seeing all sorts of strange shapes on produce like opo squashes that look like bananas, lemons that look like elephants and kiwis that look like muppets!

Countdown recently introduced The Odd Bunch, a program that will feature an assortment of oddly shaped produce on its shelves. The first items available will be hail damaged stone fruit and carrots, with more items coming soon.

Why is Odd Shaped Produce Good for You?

Contrary to popular belief, odd-shaped produce can actually be quite beneficial for you. Studies have demonstrated that produce with irregular shapes contains many of the same beneficial nutrients found in perfectly shaped varieties – antioxidants, phenolic compounds and resveratrol included – making it both healthy and economical at the same time.

Most of us spend our time admiring the attractive produce displays at our local supermarkets, overlooking more attractive choices that could easily be picked up for free. Unfortunately, billions of pounds of food is wasted annually, contributing to global warming and landfill methane release when the produce decomposes.

The key is to shift consumers’ expectations about what’s beneficial for them and the environment. This could be done by emphasizing the nutritional value of misshaped produce and showing them it as an alternative option to perfectly shaped items. Furthermore, raising consumer awareness around food waste issues and proenvironmental self-identities may encourage more people to choose these unconventionally shaped items. For instance, one study revealed that consumers at farmers’ markets were more likely to pick up an abnormally shaped grape than a standard-sized bunch.

How to Eat Odd Shaped Produce

Recently, Countdown – known for making some of the UK’s best milkshakes – conducted a survey that revealed people tend to ignore odd-shaped produce. With this in mind, they are on a mission to help shoppers embrace the golden age by highlighting underrated and under appreciated fruits and vegetables.

Countdown is delighted to be leading the most successful Odd Shaped fruit and veg campaign in the country. To kick off the initiative, the company unveiled an eye-catching display featuring hail damaged stone fruits and carrots. Furthermore, they launched an Odd Shaped food and drink competition as an incentive for consumers to give less attractive produce a try and reduce landfill accumulation of produce. In recognition of these forward thinking producers, Countdown also announced an exclusive Odd Shaped Food & Drink Award as recognition for those who have taken on this new category with enthusiasm and flair.

What to Do If Your Child Isn’t Eating Odd Shaped Produce

If your child isn’t eating his/her fruits and vegetables as expected, there are ways you can help. First of all, remember that children who avoid certain foods may not be getting all of the essential nutrients necessary for growth and development.

Second, children who don’t like new foods often don’t understand how their body works or that certain foods can be beneficial for health. Therefore, having a therapist on board to work through these issues is critical so your child can learn how to digest and enjoy various nutritious dishes.

Third, it’s essential to remember that certain foods can pose choking hazards for young children. So be sure to cut fruits and vegetables into small pieces before serving them, or refrain from offering raw veggies.

Fourth, providing your child with a diverse selection of foods from all food groups is essential for their development as an eater. Doing this allows them to taste and feel all kinds of flavors and textures in food, which in turn will encourage healthier eating habits throughout life.

Fifth, offering your child a variety of nutritious snacks during mealtime will help them avoid becoming complacent with their eating habits. Doing this may also encourage them to try different foods during meals.

Finally, it’s essential to remember your child’s food frenzies are normal and don’t necessarily signify an issue with their eating habits. They are simply part of the learning process.
