In some plots, one centimeter of surface soil was removed, and five soil cores (5 cm diameter) were collected from a depth of 30 cm. These samples were pooled using a 2-mm sieve and air-dried for soil nutrient measurements and DNA extraction. After sampling, the samples were stored at -20 degC until the next step in the process – reusing or composting the spawn.

Harvesting
